Library Student Employment Coordinator

A Student Employment Coordinator is available to answer questions regarding student employment within the Library. The Library Student Employment Coordinator collects applications and distributes them to hiring departments. Once a student is hired, the coordinator will help with the required paperwork and with setting up an electronic timecard in the system.

Application Process

Applications for the current school term are now submitted through an online application form.   Be sure to mark whether or not you have received a work study award in the Work Study Award box in the upper right-hand corner on your application. (For more information, please see section on Work Study and Budget Monies at the bottom of this page.)

Student supervisors contact the Student Employment Coordinator when an opening exists in their department. These supervisors also conduct the actual interviews and make the hiring decisions. Applications remain on file for the current semester.

Eligibility and Approval Information

In order to be eligible to work on campus, a student must be currently enrolled for the semester. Students are allowed to work during the summer session without being enrolled, as long as they show that they were enrolled for the previous spring and are also enrolled the upcoming fall semester.  Students employed by the University are limited generally to working 20 hours per week during the semester.  In addition, students may work up to 40 hours per week during breaks and summer.

It is the responsibility of the library to verify that an individual is eligible for employment before he/she begins work. The Electronic Student Approval, along with a Form W-4, Form I-9, and Iowa CERRF and a direct deposit form are completed in the Library Student Employment Coordinator's office. The Student Employment Coordinator will send the paperwork to the University Student Employment Office. The University Student Employment Office confirms that the student is enrolled in the University and, therefore, is eligible for employment.

International students must be enrolled in the Culture and Intensive English Program or a minimum of half-time (6 undergraduate hours or 5 graduate hours) in any semester in which they are employed except in the final semester of their degree program when they can be enrolled in as few as one hour. International students are not permitted to work more than a total of 20 hours from all jobs during any week (Sunday through Saturday) while school is in session. There are no exceptions to this rule. International students must go to Business Operations to complete the additional paperwork necessary for on-campus employment.

Job Descriptions and Beginning Wages

The beginning wage for students hired as a Library Assistant, Photocopy Assistant, Clerical Assistant or Mailroom Assistant is $7.50. The job descriptions and qualifications vary by department and students will receive training for these positions.

The beginning wage for students working as Building Monitors and Computer Technicians will be determined by the hiring department. These positions require a high level of comprehensive skills, responsibilities, training, and appropriate experience.

Work Study and Budget Monies

The most significant difference between work study and non-work study employees is the account from which the wages are paid. Non-work study students (departmental) are paid out of the library student assistant budget.

The work study program is an employment program awarded through Financial Aid. Work study student employees are to earn their award money by performing work tasks. The student is given an allocation of a specific dollar amount of student employment that can be earned to help defray educational costs. It is expected that the student will not only benefit financially from the program, but will also acquire valuable work experience.
